We are committed to finding well-researched, attractive investment opportunities that will enable our investors to grow their wealth over the long term. This requires members of our investment teams to have specialist skills, be dedicated, and maintain a client-centric mindset. Craig Metherell joined us last quarter as an equity analyst on the Denker Global Financial Fund. Find out more about what his role entails and what he loves about it.

What made you become an equity analyst – what was the attraction to financial markets?

Investing for the future and entrepreneurship have always been passions of mine. There is no better way to merge the two than working as an equity analyst, where we are constantly challenged to understand businesses, market trends, and the complexities of financial markets. Knowing that our core responsibility is to our clients and their long-term wealth is highly motivating and rewarding as well.

Why did you join Denker?

Denker struck me as a very entrepreneurial, shareholder-driven company with a great track record and reputation. The depth of experience, knowledge and expertise were key factors that motivated me to become a part of the Denker team. Furthermore, as an analyst on the Denker Global Financial Fund I have the opportunity to broaden my knowledge of investing across various geographies and markets and learn from experienced investment professionals.

What is a typical day in the life of an equity analyst?

Each day is different and exciting, since short-term noise often creates panic or greed in financial markets. An integral part of every day is sifting through this noise and assessing which news items or developments are relevant, processing that information, and analysing the effects in the context of valuing a business. Understanding businesses’ competitive advantages, long-term growth drivers and trends enables us to identify attractive investment opportunities despite any short-term turmoil.

Something personal – what do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I enjoy the outdoors and spending time with friends and family. I am an avid runner and cyclist and can waste a lot of time watching sport. I am married to a dietitian who ensures I eat a balanced diet of beer and biltong, and have a 20-month old daughter who keeps me on my toes.
