For our global funds, which are listed in Ireland, you have the option of investing in US dollars, Euros or British pounds. Disinvestments are paid out in foreign currency and received by investors in the currency where their bank account is held.
Alternatively, you can invest in our global funds in rands via our feeder funds which are registered in South Africa. With these funds the returns earned are paid out in rands. When investing in rands you don’t use your offshore allowance and don’t need exchange control authorisation or tax clearance because you’re not taking money out of the country.
Please visit our funds page for more information.
Important to know before you invest
If you are taking money out of South Africa and converting rands to invest in foreign currency
- You can invest up to the maximum individual offshore allowance of R10 million per year per person.
- You must comply with exchange control regulations.
- Foreign currency transactions in South Africa are subject to authorisation by the South African Reserve Bank.
- To apply for authorisation, complete the relevant form at an authorised dealer bank (any of the major banks that have a foreign exchange department – check with your bank beforehand if you’re not sure).
- For investments larger than R1 million per year, you have to apply for tax clearance.
- To apply for a tax clearance certificate contact SARS on 0800 00 7277 to request a FIA001 form. Alternatively, you can apply for tax clearance via eFiling.
- It takes up to four weeks to approve a tax clearance certificate – the time it takes will depend on the specific SARS office and your tax status. The certificate is valid for a period of 12 months from the date of issue. This certificate is required by the dealer bank to allow them to transfer your money to an offshore bank account.
If you are investing money that is already outside of South Africa
The offshore allowance is not applicable and you don’t need exchange control authorisation or tax clearance.
